The program for our January luncheon presented by Mandy McMahon from Silver Creek Daylilies titled “Hybridizing Award Winning Daylilies” was delightful after all of the wintry weather we had the previous week!
Mandy has been hybridizing daylilies for 18 years and loves every part of it! Silver Creek Daylilies is located in Hamilton, Michigan just 20 minutes from the beautiful beaches of Lake Michigan. She currently grows approximately 450 registered daylilies and 20,000 seedlings.
Each January Mandy starts about 3,000 seeds with the hopes of finding just the perfect seedling with that special "something" to introduce! She concentrates on bagel form daylilies with lots of ruffles and "extra" stuff. Mandy love eyes and edges and simply adore watermarks-they are her favorite. Teeth have also been finding their way into her program without any complaints heard from Mandy!
The last couple of years have been very exciting for Mandy. In 2016 her seedling won the Englerth Award for Region 2 of the American Daylily Society – which she introduced in 2017 and offers for sale as “Twelve O’clock The Wolf Comes”.
